Positives
The positives could go on forever, but since this is meant to be a short post lets start with the fact that it was a competitive game. With a 28 to 24 Patriots victory, the few people living under a rock that did not see the Super Bowl can look at the score and see the game was close, but this is a game that literally went down to the last few minutes. The Patriots overcame a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter with a Tom Brady touchdown to Julian Edelman with 2:06 left in the game. 2:06 was more than enough time for the Seahawks to get a yard away from a touchdown with a timeout left, at least 40 seconds on the clock, and they were only on second down. Seahawks’ offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell made the puzzling decision to call a slant route through the middle of the defense in the redzone, a very risky play that made no sense considering things I previously mentioned and had a halfback in Marshawn Lynch, who ran for 102 yards and a touchdown in this game. The play resulted in Russell Wilson throwing an interception to Patriots strong safety Malcom Butler that ended the game.
The Halftime show was great. I am not a huge Katy Perry fan, but she was good and I liked the inclusion of Missy Eliot and Lenny Kravitz. Thought they did way more with special effects this year, so I am giving it extra points for that.
Negatives
While the game was great, it did start slow with the first quarter ending with zero points scored by ether team. In a Super Bowl full of positives the biggest negative is the commercials. Personally I did not find any of them funny and there were more than one depressing commercial, which is a buzz kill to a Super Bowl party. With many none NFL fans watching Super Bowl for the commercials, many people were likely disappointed.
Overall
Commercials aside, any Super Bowl with Tom Brady throwing for 328 yards and 4 touchdowns, Russell Wilson throwing for 247 yards and 2 touchdowns, a great halftime show, and a historically bad play call, that I will personally referrer to as “The Giveaway”, deserves to be graded near perfect with a 9 out of 10.
